Boat tours to Los Haitises departing from Sabana de la Mar near Samana Bay.
Boats leave from the Sabana de la Mar pier on the south shore of Samana Bay. From Samana town, transfer is 90 minutes by road or 45 minutes by speed boat across the bay. From Las Terrenas, 75 minutes by road. Tours sail between 8 am and 9 am to catch the calmest water.
Most operators offer two formats. The classic boat tour stops at three caves with Taino petroglyphs, the mangrove channels and a beach swim. The combo version adds Cayo Levantado as the closing stop. Both run 5 to 6 hours including transfer.
You sit on a covered open sided boat that holds 12 to 40 passengers depending on operator. Captain runs at 5 knots inside the mangrove channels per park regulation. Engines must be four stroke to limit underwater noise. Life jackets are provided.
Spray on the open bay crossing is normal. Closed shoes help on cave walks. Bring a small dry bag with phone, camera, water and reef safe sunscreen. Lunch is included on full day tours and served either on the boat or at a beach palapa.
Year round product with the calmest water from December to April. The bay sits sheltered behind two headlands, so even windy days produce manageable trips. Mid January to late March overlaps with humpback whale season in the bay.
Always take the first morning slot. Wind picks up after 11 am and the caves stay shadier before noon. Booking the day before is fine outside Easter week and Christmas, both of which fill local rooms.
Tours from Samana are the shortest way to spend real time in Los Haitises National Park. Pick a small group format, lock the 8 to 9 am departure and pack closed shoes plus a dry bag. The park does the rest.
